Minister of Sport Mirosław Drzewiecki has declared that the government will
not help Gdańsk, Poznań, and Wrocław finance the building of stadiums for Euro
2012. Yesterday the Minister announced that such promises had been made by the
previous government. "Euro 2012 will promote the cities hosting the event.
Therefore, they should shoulder the responsibilty of these preparations," said
Drzewiecki. He also argued that 20% of subsidies was promised by the former PiS
government and would create an unnecessary precedent. The minister claimed that
the government does not give subsidies to many other cities, which do not host
Euro, although they also need stadiums, football pitches, and sport halls.

In his view, Gdańsk, Poznań, and Wrocław have to cope with the construction work
without the financial help of the government, as they had pledged to do to UEFA.
"These declarations are a huge misunderstanding," fumed the Mayor of Wrocław
Rafał Dudkiewicz. "In politics there is 'the rule of continuation'. The promise
of 20% has already been made. It is irrelevant that it was done by another party
(Law and Justice)," added an irritated Dudkiewicz. The mayors of the other
cities in question were equally outspoken in their critical reactions. Scared by
their indignation, the Minister called Gazeta Wyborcza in the
evening and, though confirming his stance, said that the government would not
leave the cities high and dry.
