Krakow is desperate to host some of the events of the Euro 2012 continental football championships awarded jointly to Poland and Ukraine. The city council unanimously passed a resolution appealing to Michel Platini, the president of the UEFA, to choose Krakow as the site of the championship's opening game as well as a semifinal and a quarterfinal in addition to qualifying matches in 2012.

The city was originally assigned to a reserve as it lost to other Polish municipalities in the opening bid for the Euro 2012 events.
